Holiday Cravings

What do you crave around the holidays?  For me, one of my favorites is Peppermint Hot Chocolate and today is the perfect, cold, rainy day to have one!  Below is one of the recipes that I enjoy (Martha Stewart):

Ingredients:             Serves 4
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 quart milk
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips (3 ounces)
7 peppermint sticks; 3 crushed (1/4 cup), 4 left whole
pinch of salt

Directions:

1.     Place cocoa in a medium saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk until cocoa has dissolved. Add chocolate chips and crushed peppermint; simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until chocolate and peppermint have melted, 8 to 10 minutes.
2.      Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat.  Add salt.  Ladle into mugs; serve each with a peppermint stick.

Another treat that makes me think of the holidays is Peppermint Bark.  We had a meeting yesterday and it was passed around the table.  Let’s just say, there wasn’t much left over.  YUM!

Where have I been?!

Yes, I have been MIA!  There has been so much going on since July.  I coordinate events for a foundation so this month, I’ve been busy with their company holiday party.

I’ve also been busy with babies, babies and more babies!  I have several friends that have all delivered within the past few months and I’m so excited for them!  It’s so refreshing to see a new life come into the world.  Puts a new perspective on things.

I’ve been MIA because I’ve been focusing on my own family.  There have been a lot of new, exciting and life changing events happening in my own home.

I’m hoping to sit down very soon and catch up on everything else that is important to me!

I wish everyone a very happy holiday!

Hoot for Harlow!

I had the pleasure of planning a FIRST birthday party.  We decided on an Owl theme ~ “Hoot for Harlow”!  The colors throughout were pink & green.  I contacted Lori from Paper and Thread for the candy bar labels.  She also made the months of the year for the timeline that was hung on the patio. Megan Ann Photography captured all of the special moments!  I love the pictures she put together (below)!  Planning parties for kids is so much fun.  I have another one coming up and I can't wait!

Summer Favorite | Plumeria

One of my favorite things of summer... Plumeria!  I have a few of them growing in my backyard and they just bloomed.  What timing to get us in the mood for our upcoming vacation.  It's intersting to read where they are common and the meaning of the flower depending on the culture.  To read more, click here.

Changes | MCW&E

So many changes have been happening in my life.  Many for the better but I'm sad and happy to report that my amazingly talented Assistants, Sarah and Alba also have big changes happening, thus leaving me in the dust (sniff, sniff).

Sarah has moved out of San Diego in pursuit of a career in marketing.  She recently graduated from UCSD.  With her talent and determination, I know it won't take her long to find her dream job.  Success is right around the corner for Sarah!

Alba has started her very own baking biz, "Sweet Creations by Alba".  One of my lovely couples, Noah & April hired her for their wedding cake and cupcakes!  It was soooo delicious.  Yes, I had a piece.  Hello!  I couldn't resist.  YUM.  I wish her the best of luck to her on her new adventure.

Steam Powered Giraffe | Noah & April

During one of my meetings with Noah, I asked him what kind of entertainment he'd like to have during his cocktail reception.  He said he found this group of performers called Steam Powered Giraffe.  Huh?  Noah & April are the most outgoing, fun-loving people I know.  I knew this was going to be good!  So "who or what is Steam Powered Giraffe?" you ask??

"The short answer: A Musical Pantomime Troupe featuring robot imitation with song.

If you're thinking to yourself, "Mimes can't talk!" You're in for a surprise.

Imagine you're visiting the World's Fair circa 1939. You are surrounded by art deco styled buildings, and everything is splashed with retro-metropolistic themes. A wondrous exhibition of odd technologies for a brighter future!" ... for more information, please check out their website!

It's so Sweet...Cheeks!

I hosted a birthday party for a one year old over the weekend.  I sent Sweet Cheeks Baking Company a photo to use for inspiration and they came up with the most beautiful owl cake.  Not only was it aesthetically pleasing, but the taste... A-Mazing!  I will post pictures as soon as I get them but for now, check out some of their other work!

It's the little things...

I am addicted to Anthropologie.  Yes.  I admit it!
I went in the other day to look for some accessories to go in our guest bedroom and I came across these.
It's amazing that something so simple can add so much to a room.

Cute Find | Owl Pinata!

I'm still working on the Owl themed first birthday party.  I came across this adorable Owl Pinata from Birthday Express.  Yes, I've already ordered it!  I wonder what else I'll come across...

Glamour Closet | San Francisco

I was in San Francicso the other weekend and on my way to get a capaccino I ran into the cutest discount bridal boutique... Glamour Closet!  Unfortunatly they weren't open yet.
It was super early in the morning (hence the capaccino!) but I took a couple of pictures.
Hopefully I'll get to go in my next trip back!

New Project | First Birthday

Not only am I lucky enough to plan weddings but I also work on other events as well.  One of my favorites... FIRST birthday parties!  I've planned and coordinated 3 so far.  The one I'm working on now is for a little girl.  We've chosen the colors green & pink and the theme, Owl!
{ Hoot for Harlow! }
Super cute.  Today I worked on the boxes for the candy "bar."
I can't wait to see how the cake turns out!

{ boxes, ribbon & labels from beou coup }

A friend of mine { the lovely, Marina! } made the invitations and delivered them today!
They are A-MA-ZING!!  The time and detail that she put into them... unreal.
Nobody could choose which one to use.  Each design was so cute that we're using both!

Engagement Session | Amanda & Miguel

Meet Amanda & Miguel.  They recently had their engagement session done at Balboa Park in San Diego.  Their second location was on the beach in La Jolla at sunset.  We have so many amazing photo spots here! They are two of the sweetest people I've met and I'm so thrilled to be helping them plan their wedding.  To see more of their pictures, go to my website Misty Connelly Weddings & Events

Choosing the right diamond!

I went to my jeweler today to pick up a ring I had them make for me and I was in awe of all of the beautiful diamonds in their store!  It had been a while since I was there and I forgot how fun it was to look at diamonds { what... say it ain't so! }.  There was a couple in there looking at engagement rings and they were asking some very good questions.  Do you know what to look for when choosing a diamond??  I went to http://www.bluenile.com to get the scoop so that I could post it for all of you.

Here comes summer!

{Aloha Maui! Four Seasons Resort}

So summer is right around the corner and I know some of you are already planning your vacation.  Where is your favorite spot to escape to?!  Mine is Maui, Hawaii.  I've been vacationing there since I was in elementary school and it never gets old.
For us, it's all about relaxing on the beach with our favorite tasty beverage, a good book and of course an amazing view!

Who knew...

I signed up for a Twitter account not too long ago not really knowing what to expect. Come to find out, it has been a big help to me! I recently found a few very talented wedding vendors on Twitter and one of my brides has already booked two of them. I also plan on using one for a trash-the-dress session this summer. I look forward to meeting and working with many more amazing vendors. I'm sure I'll meet most of them via Twitter! Ahhhh technology.

I heart Paper & Thread!

I recently met with the oh-so-talented Lori from Paper & Thread. My November bride is having a tropical themed wedding at the Paradise Pointe Resort. I set up an appointment to have her meet with Lori to discuss ideas for her invitation suite as well as day of stationary pieces. I'm anxious to see the sample!

La Costa Resort and Spa

Life has been so busy lately! It's important to take some time for yourself to refresh. I do this by going to get a massage at La Costa Resort and Spa! I've been going there for years and I leave every time feeling like a brand new person. So relaxing! I spend the whole day there. Starting with spending time at the spa pool, a spa lunch and then treatment time. I highly recommend the hot stone massage. I get this one no matter where I go. Four Seasons Maui and recently at the MGM Spa {Las Vegas}

My husband is coming with me to La Costa. It will be nice to spend some alone time together. Even though we work together, we have long work days so it's important to us to spend quality time together on our off days. It's all about having a good, balanced life. So far, so good.

Pluggin' along...

{Invitation by: Marina, creativecandy4u.blogspot.com}

I've been thinking of ideas for my November brides Tropical themed wedding. I found a cute idea for the escort cards. Now that we have some of the bigger items checked off the list, we can start focussing on the fun details. This weekend we're meeting with our brilliant invitation gal! She does hand-made invitations that are to die for! She will get ideas from my bride, put together a few samples and then make the final product. I love that she will be able to capture my couples style and personality, rather than just picking an invite from a book.

Our next stop this weekend is hunting for a bridal gown. My fave! Amanda has found a few dresses that she likes. We need to get going on this. They're wedding is 6 months away! Getting so excited.

Bencotto ~ Little Italy

So I went to lunch today with my friend Gabriela. We drove to Little Italy and discovered a new place called Bencotto! Love, love, love! The food, prices and atmosphere are perfect. I'm very excited to take my husband there. We were greeted by Valentina as soon as we walked in the door. She was so charming! Her accent and the yummy food made me feel like I was back in Italy... I wish! Check out their website. Better yet - eat there! You won't be disappointed.

Buying a wedding gown...

I was recently talking to one of my brides about searching for her wedding gown. She had mentioned to me that she was going to wait another month before going on the hunt! I mentioned to her that she might want to start now since her wedding is in 7 months. It takes some time to actually find the right dress, then it takes even longer to receive it.... then there are the alterations. Phew! Of course you also have to option of buying a dress "off the rack." I always say, the earlier you look, the better. Below is an article I found on theknot.com in regards to buying a wedding gown.

You spent your lifetime dreaming about your wedding gown, so shopping for it is sure to be an exhilarating, exciting and yes, overwhelming experience. When should you start? Where should you go? What happens once you're there? Well, your worrying is over. From ordering to altering, here's everything you need to know.

When to Begin
Two words: Shop early. Nine to twelve months before the wedding is ideal, since it's best to have about six months to spare for fittings. Why? Unless you buy a ready-to-wear gown or a sample, wedding gowns are custom-made (and any beading are likely hand-sewn). Then, once the gown arrives, it must be altered -- usually several times -- to fit you perfectly. That said, many companies can turn a gown around quickly. If you have less than six months, it's not impossible, just get started pronto. One tip: Go simple. As a rule, the less complicated the gown, the less time it takes to make and fit.

If you have lots of time, you can hit every salon, shop 'til you drop, and agonize over your gown decision. Most important, be decisive!

9 to 12 Months Before
[ ] Start envisioning yourself in your wedding gown. Think about your everyday style. Now write down six adjectives that best describe how you want to look and feel (summery, sweet, elegant, royal, sexy, sophisticated, demure, over-the-top, to name a few).

[ ] Choose the time of day and formality of your wedding before you set foot in a store.

[ ] Start learning the ins and outs of wedding gowns. Get the lingo down and determine which design elements will complement your body.

[ ] Hone in on a specific style. Browse through the thousands of options on The Knot Wedding Dress Search to find designers and styles you like. Save some of your favorites and print them out. Jot down a few names and gown elements that you find especially appealing.

[ ] Now get some paper and a pencil and put into words what you absolutely do not want in a gown (for example, short sleeves, a full skirt, or beading).

[ ] Determine your gown budget -- a good guideline is to spend 10% of your overall wedding budget.

8 Months Before
[ ] Find two or three salons that suit you. Ask recently married friends where they bought their gowns and whether they had a good experience. Check to see which salons carry the designers you like. Call and make appointments, allowing at least one hour at each salon. Use a notebook to keep track of the salons, addresses, dates, and times.

[ ] Decide who to bring and invite them along. Limit your entourage to no more than three oglers at once.

[ ] Get your gear ready. Many salons provide some of the essentials listed below, but they may not fit properly:

A strapless bra or bustier
Control-top panty hose (gowns go on more smoothly, especially the often-too-small sample sizes)
A slip if you plan to try on sheaths or slip dresses
Shoes with approximately the same heel height you plan to wear on your wedding day
Tissues for when your mom sees you in your first gown

[ ] As you shop take careful notes on the dresses and the designers you like and write down descriptions of the gowns with prices.

[ ] A few words on sizing: Wedding gowns can run small. The store will measure your bust, waist, and hips, consult the individual manufacturer's sizing chart, and order the size that matches your largest measurement (it's much easier and less expensive to take in a dress than to let it out).

7 Months Before
[ ] Narrow down your gown choices and go for a second (or third or fourth!) salon visit. You can return as many times as you like. No matter how indecisive you think you are, you probably won't come close to being the most neurotic bride they've ever helped. Also, make at least one trip on your own (so you can ponder your options without others' opinions coloring your thoughts).

[ ] At the salon, ask if the gown has coordinating accessories (veil or shawl) and try them on, too. Don't feel pressured to order anything: You still have time to look elsewhere for accessories.

6 Months Before
[ ] Order your gown. Make sure the following contract points are in writing on your receipt:

designer name
style number or name
size or measurements the salon is sending to the manufacturer
approximate delivery date
how many fittings are included in the price (if any)
how much money you still owe for the gown
amount of your deposit and that it's marked paid

5 Months Before
[ ] Call the salon to confirm the delivery date.

[ ] Decide what accessories -- shoes, lingerie, jewelry, headwear, wrap, gloves, outerwear, and bag -- you need (or want!) and shop for them. For ideas, check out The Knot Accessory Search.

[ ] If you plan to lose weight before your wedding, do so before your fittings begin. Once fittings are underway, try to maintain your weight. (Better yet, forget about the diet -- obviously he thinks you look great just the way you are.)

6 Weeks Before (or once your gown has arrived)
[ ] Have your first fitting. Invite an honest, sharp-eyed friend or family member to come along. Bring your accessories, too, so you can see the whole look.

4 to 5 Weeks Before
[ ] Have your second fitting. Make sure that:

The hem of a full-length gown skims the tops of the toes of your shoes
You can move comfortably
The gown stays in place as you move
There is no obvious wrinkling, bunching, or pulling

[ ] Continue to schedule fittings until you are completely satisfied.

[ ] Bring your maid of honor to your final fitting to learn about the gown. Does it need bustling? Ask the salesperson to teach her how to do it. Does it have complicated straps or buttons? Make sure she knows how to work them. Also, find out how to banish last-minute wrinkles. Should you use an iron? On what setting? Is steaming a better option? And what if you spill something on the gown? Are there certain products you should or shouldn't use?

3 Weeks Before
[ ] Schedule a day and time to pick up your gown from the salon. We suggest you try it on one last time, no matter what the salon says, especially if it's been a while since your last fitting. We all know stress affects our appetites, and if you suddenly don't fit into your gown you need time to adjust it, or your diet.

[ ] Pick up your gown!

Mount Soledad

I'm meeting my July bride and groom today so that we can pay for their ceremony site and finally lock in that date! Mount Soledad is going to be beautiful. Million dollar views! July will be here before we know it. Now... off to find a photographer for my November wedding!
